Gathering signatures – some tips
Where can I get more petitions?
Send email to (email to come)to request more petitions and maps. We can mail them or deliver them in person.
What do I do with petitions after they are signed?
You must fill in the back of the petition and sign it. Then mail the petitions to Pam at the address on the top of the petition, or send an email to (email to come)and we can pick them up.

Do I have to witness every signature on the petition?
Yes! When you sign the back of the petition, you are stating that you witnessed each voter signature on the front. This means you should not leave petitions to be signed unattended, nor should you hand your petition over to another volunteer to have them continue gathering signatures with it.

What lines on the form must a signer fill out?
Petition signers must sign their name in the first block. If they need assistance filling out the rest of the form, you can fill out the remaining blocks. All blocks must be filled out. In particular, the address block must contain their street address not a P.O. Box and the date column should contain the day, month and year the petition was signed. Please look at the form before the signer leaves to make sure all the necessary information is filled out.

 Where can I gather signatures?
The best place to gather petitions are at community events, post office, libraries and public places. On private property you will have to secure permission to gather signatures. Ideal events include local elections, art festivals, home shows, tailgate parties, etc. The best place to petition is at the entrance or exit to these events, though signatures can be successfully gathered anywhere where there is a "bottleneck."
NOTE: If you have been given permission to collect signatures outside a business, it is generally a good idea to ask people to sign as they are leaving the establishment. Voters are more willing to sign on their way out, and it will help to keep the store owner happy.

Can I gather signatures on the Maricopa College campuses?
If you are an employee you must restrict gathering signatures on campus to other than work hours. So before and after work, during lunch hour, and on weekends is fine. Each campus has a special place for petition gatherers. Call the Office of Student Life for location information. Other signature gatherers need only check with Student Life to get the correct location for petition carriers.

How many signatures do we need to get on the ballot?
To qualify for the Nov. 4 ballot, valid signatures must be collected from approximately 1700 registered voters living in Maricopa County Supervisor District #3. To get this number of valid signatures, we will need to collect 3,000 total signatures. This may mean asking 6,000 people because about half will decline to sign.

 Who can circulate a petition?
Anyone who is qualified to register to vote in the Maricopa County is eligible to circulate the petitions. This means a circulator must be 18, a US citizen, a resident of Maricopa County for at least 30 days, and have no felony convictions.

 Who can sign the petitions?
Only those registered to vote in Maricopa County Supervisor District #4. Consult the map if they are unsure.

What is the best way to ask for a signature?
The best way to ask for a signature is to first place the petition in the person’s hand and ask:
"Have you had a chance to sign my petition?" If they ask what the petition is for, you can say:
"This is a petition to get [my friend, my colleague, whatever adjective you want] Randolph Lumm on the November ballot. He is hoping to run for the Community College Governing Board representing this area.”

If they continue to press you on the issue you can say:
I just want to help get her name on the ballot so the voters can decide who they’d like to vote for.  Will you help get his name on the ballot?"

What is the best way to gather petition signatures?
The best way to gather petitions is one person asking another person to sign – handing them the petition – and immediately receiving the signed petition back.

And here are tips from yet another source: The Community Tool Box: http://ctb.ku.edu
 # Location. Think "indoors" if you can--signatures are usually easier to collect. However, if you will be collecting outdoors, choose settings which are relatively dense and where people will be most likely to give you their attention. Scheduled outdoor events are one possibility, such as picnics, parades, or athletic events. If this is not an option, choose places where people are usually not in a hurry--in front of post offices, libraries, or courthouses, for example. Shopping centers are also possible, if local conditions permit.
When approaching potential signers, some common-sense guidelines apply:
 # Be dressed appropriately, though probably not "dressed to kill."
 # Smile. Make eye contact.
 # Be assertive and polite in your approach. Both are equally essential.
 # Explain your general purpose, as well as what the specific petition is intended to do. Plan your opening words carefully, as the first words you speak are probably your most important in convincing someone to sign.
 # Ask if your target person would be willing to sign the petition. A basic framework might be:
“Excuse me, (sir or ma'am), we are collecting signatures to get Randolph Lumm on the November ballot. Your signature will help enable her to run for the college governing board. Do you think you would be able to sign the petition? “
Verify that your target person is eligible to sign – lives in District #4. Offer map if necessary.
 # Answer questions, but be brief. It's not a good use of time to get into long conversations--and it's neither efficient nor effective to get into arguments. If someone opposes your petition, and some people will, say "thank you" and move on. In petition drives, rejection comes with the territory. Don't take it personally.
