Until a recent Supreme Court decision, Federal law prohibited corporations and unions from donating to (or otherwise influencing) political elections or legislation. However, they are allowed to sponsor a political action committee (PAC). The sponsoring organizations cannot contribute to these PACs; however, the employees or members of the sponsoring organization can contribute (subject to strict limits) or volunteer their services to further the goals of the PAC.
In 1998, the Maricopa Community College Faculty Association sponsored a PAC to promote legislation, candidates, and ballot measures that positively affect student teaching and learning.
